When we lived full time in our 19-foot Airstream, a beautiful campsite was not useful if we could not get online when the workweek started.
We left in November 2020 and traveled into early 2022, before Starlink Roam was part of our setup. Our internet came through an older T-Mobile 5G hotspot we received with an internet membership from the Calyx Institute. It was small, portable, and capable of turning the Airstream into a working space whenever we had usable cellular coverage.
That last condition shaped more of our route than a campsite photograph could show. The hotspot gave us plenty of places to go, but not every place we wanted to go. Internet coverage became one more part of the landscape, as real to our planning as weather, water, campground availability, or the road into a site.
Our life looks different now. We have moved off the road and travel in the Airstream recreationally. Before a recent trip to visit Scott’s parents, where the hotspot had given us the most trouble, we purchased a Starlink Mini and used it on the Roam plan. The difference feels wild. Places we once questioned or ruled out because of cellular coverage now look possible, especially across the open spaces of the West.
Starlink does not make the promise “work from anywhere” literally true. It does make our workable map much larger.
Internet was part of every campsite decision
On a workday, the campsite also had to be our office. A beautiful view could not make up for a connection that dropped halfway through a call.
During our full-time years, we could not treat connectivity as something we would solve after arriving. If a destination sat outside the hotspot’s usable coverage, staying there could mean losing the connection we needed to complete the day’s work. A place could be spectacular and still be the wrong weekday campsite for us.
We still found plenty of campgrounds, small towns, private stays, and outdoor destinations where the hotspot worked. We traveled widely, but the cellular footprint drew the boundary.
Remote work and spontaneous travel pulled in different directions. We could have both, as long as internet access was part of the plan before we arrived.
Why the Calyx hotspot worked for us
Calyx was an unusually practical fit for that chapter. Its internet membership included a mobile hotspot and mobile internet for as long as the membership remained active. We could carry the unit in the Airstream, power it, connect our devices, and work without installing a dish or arranging service at each stop.
The simplicity mattered. Our home moved regularly, so our internet needed to move with it. We were not looking for a connection tied to a street address. We needed one setup that could come with us from site to site.
The hotspot also suited the scale of the Airstream. It did not require much storage or a permanent exterior installation. When the signal was good enough, the process was ordinary: turn it on, connect, and get to work. That ordinariness is a meaningful benefit when the rest of the week already includes towing, setting up camp, errands, maintenance, and route planning.
Most of the places where we used it outside the parks worked well. The main exception was Scott’s parents’ place. Even inside a 19-foot trailer, placement mattered: we learned that the hotspot worked best when we propped it against one particular window in the Airstream. It was a small, low-tech trick, but it captures the reality of cellular internet on the road. Sometimes the difference between working and struggling came down to where we set the hotspot.
Our old device and membership are not a shopping list for today. Calyx’s equipment and carrier arrangements have changed. What has held up is our experience: the hotspot made full-time travel and remote work possible, and cellular coverage decided which campsites could support both.
The coverage map was only the beginning
A coverage map can help narrow a search. It cannot tell you exactly how a connection will behave in one campsite.
Terrain, distance from a tower, obstructions, local congestion, and the precise location of a rig can all change the result. Calyx’s current coverage guidance makes the same distinction: the map is a starting point, and actual signal and speed can vary at the location.
Before a workday, that uncertainty made us cautious. Going beyond reliable cellular service required time away from work, a known fallback, or a willingness to change the destination.
What changed when we added Starlink Roam
After moving off the road, we bought a Starlink Mini for a return trip to Scott’s parents and used the Roam plan. This was not a replacement made during the original journey. It belongs to a newer chapter, which is why the contrast is so clear to us. The Mini gave us a portable alternative at the place where the hotspot had struggled most.
A cellular hotspot asks, “Can we reach a tower from this site?” Starlink asks a different question: “Can the terminal get the clear view of the sky it needs?” Starlink’s own Mini setup guidance tells customers to check for obstructions, choose a clear view, and connect the equipment to power.
That exchange changes the map. A remote site beyond practical cellular coverage may still be a Starlink candidate if the service is available there and the sky is open. For western travel, where so many of the places we want to explore sit far from towns and towers, that creates possibilities we did not have during our full-time years.
We never ran a controlled speed comparison, and performance can vary. The change we notice is location. More places now pass our first test: could we realistically work there?
Calyx and Starlink solve different campsite problems

The two systems are not opposites, and satellite does not make cellular service irrelevant. A quick overnight stop under heavy tree cover may favor cellular service. A wide-open site far from a tower may favor Starlink. Each has blind spots that the other may avoid.
We stopped asking which service was best. The better question was which limitation we were more likely to encounter at the places we wanted to stay.
Check whether Starlink fits your route
Starlink expanded the number of open-sky campsites where we could realistically work, but it did not remove the need for power, a clear view, and a fallback. Check current availability, equipment, Roam plans, and referral terms for your own location before buying.

More freedom still needs a backup plan
The phrase “work from anywhere” is tempting, but work creates consequences when a connection fails. A missed evening stream is inconvenient. A lost connection during something that cannot be rescheduled can be a larger problem.
We would still build a working trip around a few practical habits:
- Separate travel days from important workdays. Arriving with time to test a site is safer than discovering a problem just before work begins.
- Check both kinds of coverage. Look at cellular service, Starlink availability, and the actual sky around the campsite rather than trusting one map or marketing phrase.
- Plan the power system. The connection is only useful while the hotspot, Starlink equipment, computers, and the rest of the work setup can stay powered.
- Keep a fallback destination. Know where you can move if terrain, congestion, obstructions, or equipment makes the first site unworkable.
- Test before promising availability. A real connection test at the site is more valuable than an assumption made during booking.
These are not rules that make failure impossible. They are ways to stop connectivity from becoming an invisible risk in an otherwise beautiful plan.
The old setup gave us the road; the new one expands it
It would be easy to look back at the Calyx years only through what the hotspot could not reach. That would miss what it gave us.
We worked from a moving 19-foot home and traveled across the country during a period when portable satellite internet was not part of our setup. Cellular coverage limited some choices, but it left plenty of meaningful places open to us. The constraint made us plan more carefully; it did not make the life impossible.
Starlink Roam changes the equation without erasing every constraint. It requires different equipment, power, and open sky. Service terms and performance can change. Some campsites will still be poor places to depend on an internet connection.
But the opportunity feels dramatically bigger. Now, when we picture taking the Airstream west and working near the places that once sat outside our cellular boundary, the first answer is no longer automatically “we probably cannot stay there.” It is “let’s find out if the sky is open.”
We still do not have internet everywhere. What we have is useful enough: many more places where a workday might be possible.
